Worlds of Wonder (Writing Process Blog Hop)

Happy Almost-the-Weekend!

If you've found your way here through some other windy, twisty and very interesting route ... Congratulations! That's the way all the best stories happen, so welcome to the inner mind of an author.

That's sort of the point of this meandering literary offering. This is one stop on what I hope is for you a fun-filled ride of exploration into how and why writers write. Each author on this blog hop answers the same four questions about their current works in progress, their process and how they go about getting the voices out of their heads and onto the screen or page. You can go backwards or forwards in this journey, following the links and threads to see what makes writers write.

Like many writers, I think, my love of writing sprang from my love of reading. There's something uniquely special about breathing life into a whole new world, giving birth to captivating characters and putting them into some pretty amazing situations.

1) What are you working on?

Three things, actually.  

One is Hidden Jewel, the third book in my Jewel trilogy with Siren Publishing. Stolen Jewel, Book 2, came out in January, and it's a followup to The Family Jewel, my most popular futuristic erotic romance. Hidden Jewel features warrior Isvan te Jerran - the grown son of my heroine in The Family Jewel - teaming  up with his lover, former sex slave Coren Riker, and spy Nerissa to crack a slave ring. 

Two is Three Wanton Wishes, Book 2 in my Love in a Bottle series with Samhain, which started with Three Wicked Wishes. In Three Wanton Wishes, my genie Jane aims to get a devoted single dad together with his daughter's sweet, exotic nanny.

And three is Hounds, the rewrite for my Young Adult novel featuring werewolves and hellhounds. (Yes, I swear I'm still working on it!)

2) How does your work differ from others in the genre? 

I like to think the humour in my writing sets it apart from others - and, yes, I know we all like to believe we are perfect little snowflakes, no two alike. Even though my characters get into some pretty terrible situations, I like to help them find time to laugh. I know I do when I write certain scenes or dialogue, and I hope my readers are laughing right along with me.

3)Why do you write what you write?

This one's easy: I write what I love to read. Space, starships, hunky heroes and smart women. Magic and mystery, genies and wishes. Even werewolves and mermaids and rock stars, oh my! All with love and out-of-this-world passion, and adventure and fun, fun, FUN!

4) How does your writing process work?

Trickier ... I know how I'd like my writing process to work. I'd like to be able to plot my book from start to finish, schedule a regular writing time every day, blow through those revises and edits, and never, ever get waylaid by life's little challenges like cooking, cleaning, the day job and, oh yes, making sure my family doesn't forget me because they never see me emerge from the writing cave.

In reality, I almost always start with the kernel of an idea. It could be a character I want to write a story for, but it usually begins with a situation and answering the question: What if? What if the Little Mermaid found out her prince was an ass, and went back to the loving arms of her yummy merman? (Oh, yeah - forgot to add that to my list of works in progress, though all I've written so far is the bare bones of an outline.)

I take my idea and power-write in bullet points as much of it as I can think of in one sitting, which usually involves start, finish and some major plot points in between. Sometimes it involves the rough details of my main characters, although they usually evolve out of the scenario. From there, it's pantser all the way. When I start writing, it's always best if I write straight through, without pausing to reread what I've written. If I get stuck, I try to skip ahead to what I know in my mind should happen after whatever was giving me a hard time, then come back to it later. If I reread what I've written before I finish, I get sucked down the self-editing rabbit hole. It happens much more often than I'd like.

On the plus side, I usually only write one draft, then do a run-though to polish it up before submitting it. I wish I could produce far more books than I do, but there just aren't enough hours in the day. I still love it, though, when I can get lost in world-building and exploring those new realms with my characters.

Wow. I can honestly say I never intended to write this much. See, that's what you get when someone is asked to talk about themselves. Yak yak yak! :lol

With that said, I hope you enjoy my writing world as much as I do.

RT bound ...

Hi folks!

I'm on my way to Kansas City, Missouri, for the RT Booklovers Convention. I'm really looking forward to hooking up with old friends and meeting new ones. It's always my favourite trip of the year, not least of which is the fact I'm surrounded by all things writerly -- other authors, readers, and folks who generally love books and reading as much as I do.

The End

There is nothing as satisfying as typing “the end” on your manuscript, even if it is only in your mind.

I’m of the opinion that it never really is “the end,” though. As in any other profession, be it driving a bus or running a company, writers mature and improve and shape their craft throughout their lives.

I like to think I’ve become a better writer – heck, just finishing a book is a huge improvement from my early days! I’ve got any number of unfinished manuscripts kicking around on my hard drive. Some I may go back to. Others I might cannibalize … (Hmmm, such a nasty word. How about take inspiration from? Better.) Others I may use as inspiration for newer works. And still more will never, ever see the light of day, and that’s a good thing. Regardless of the final outcome, I learn something from each effort.

And I continue to learn, when years later I read over my stories, published and not. I always consider ways my work could have been better, my characters more interesting, my dialogue snappier, my plot a bit darker. I think, “Oh, I should have done this,” or “It really would have been better if my hero had done that,” or “Did I really have to use the word ‘really’ so much?” :lol

Even so, with every story there are also those bits of gold, the scenes that surprise and amuse and make me proud to know that, hey, I wrote that and I still think it’s good. It’s especially great when I fall in love with my characters all over again, and remember how caught up in their “lives” I got while I was throwing them in the river, hoping they could swim (but maybe they couldn’t, and – ooooh – what would happen next?!). I prefer to think of those passages rather than the ones that make me want to reach for my red editing pen.

Regardless, with every figurative “the end” comes a sigh of relief, a sense of satisfaction and the urge to get the story out there to, hopefully, surprise, amuse and entertain my readers.

And then it starts all over again as the next idea starts kicking to be born on the page, and I can look forward to the next …

Underpainting

If great characters are what give life to a story, underpainting is what gives life to the characters.

Underpainting is the technique of adding the everyday minutiae to your scenes -- the cutting glance, the raspy tone, the chilling touch, the exotic scent and the voluptuous taste. Just as real people are more than what we say, our characters are more than their dialogue. They need to do things, touch things, hear, listen, smell to really live on the page. That’s not to say they need to dance and sing their way through the plot, but giving them actions and scenes that engage the readers’ five senses is key to any great story.

Underpainting is description, yes, but it’s more about the little things that add realism to the world you’re building. A writer can say a character sits down in an office chair, but by adding realistic touches such as the hushed rasp of leather or squeak of a wheel adds the kind of detail that most of us register without noticing, unless it is absent. If a character is cooking, what are they doing? Cutting up vegetables, skilfully or not; stirring a bubbling pot of red sauce that is spicy enough to make one’s eyes water; tearing the rip-strip from a frozen dinner, noisily stabbing a fork, pop! Pop! Pop! in the plastic and shoving the little black tray in the microwave?

Here’s an example of a scene written without underpainting. It’s from my current work-in-progress, Three Wishes. My heroine, Cassandra – who is secretly in love with her co-worker, consultant David – has just been startled out of her wits by the shocking, magical arrival of a strange woman in her tiny apartment during an I Dream of Jeanie marathon. Jane, as the woman quickly introduces herself, is a genie.

“Well, excuse me if you don’t look like any genie I’ve ever seen.”

“Oh, you mean like this?” Jane snapped her fingers. From one blink to the next, she went from lounging on the loveseat in leather and angora to hovering over a brass, Aladdin-style lamp, wearing nothing more than strings of jewels and transparent purple veils. Jane snapped her fingers again. Away went the veils and lamp.

“What is it with people? Always with the theatrics,” she said. “Sorry to disappoint you, Princess Jasmine, but I don’t do a song-and-dance routine with an elephant and a flying carpet with language issues.”

“All right, Jane. Let’s say I believe you. You’re a genie. The genie of the bottle. So, what’s next?”

“Your three wishes, of course.”

Cassie didn’t know what to say. Wishes? That didn’t seem to matter to Jane, who continued in a business-like tone. “Let’s talk ground rules.”

“Sure. Let’s.”

“First, you’ve gotta understand I’m not your usual sort of genie.”

“Oh, I can believe it.”

“I cater to a special kind of … we’ll call them ‘clients’.”

Cassie nodded.

“Forget about fame, fortune, world peace — my wishes are much more personal in nature. Intimate. Your deepest, darkest desires.”

“So that means …?”

“Silly woman! I will make your fantasies come true.”

“Fantasies. But I don’t have any fantasies.”

Jane snorted. “Shyeah. Sweetie, I know what you were thinking about your neighbor’s hunk of the week. Kyle, wasn’t it?”

“So he was attractive. I can admit it. So what? Besides, I barely even thought …”

“Gotta hand it to you, Cass, you sure can pack at lot of action into a few seconds of prurient thoughts.”

“Oh, for the love of—”

“Not that I’m complaining. Professionally speaking, I like creative thinkers.” Before Cassie could stutter out another protest, Jane waved her hand in a dismissive gesture. “Anyway, back to business. Your wishes.”

“Wishes. Right. By all means, let’s get to the wishes.”

And here’s the same scene, with the underpainting:

“Well, excuse me if you don’t look like any genie I’ve ever seen.”

“Oh, you mean like this?” Jane snapped her fingers. From one blink to the next, she went from lounging on the loveseat in leather and angora to hovering over a brass, Aladdin-style lamp, wearing nothing more than strings of jewels and transparent purple veils. Not one part of her body touched the floor. Cassie’s jaw dropped. With a jangle of gold bracelets, Jane snapped her fingers again. Away went the veils and lamp. The supple leather pants barely made a sound as Jane settled back on the loveseat, propped her heels on the footstool and crossed her long legs at the ankles.

“What is it with people? Always with the theatrics,” she said. “Sorry to disappoint you, Princess Jasmine, but I don’t do a song-and-dance routine with an elephant and a flying carpet with language issues.” Jane muttered something that sounded like, “Damn that Disney guy, anyway.”

“All right, Jane. Let’s say I believe you. You’re a genie.” Cassie was proud of herself for not stumbling over the word. “The genie of the bottle.” Swallowing the half-nervous, half-hysterical titter was harder. “So, what’s next?”

Jane twirled a lock of midnight black hair around one finger, the nail of which had been shaped into a perfect oval painted a pretty shell pink. “Your three wishes, of course.”

Cassie didn’t know what to say. Wishes? That didn’t seem to matter to Jane, who continued in a business-like tone. “Let’s talk ground rules.”

“Sure. Let’s.”

“First, you’ve gotta understand I’m not your usual sort of genie.”

“Oh, I can believe it.”

Jane’s brow quirked, as if she detected Cassie’s thinly shaded sarcasm, but chose to ignore it. “I cater to a special kind of … we’ll call them ‘clients’.”

Cassie nodded.

“Forget about fame, fortune, world peace — my wishes are much more personal in nature. Intimate. Your deepest, darkest desires.”

Again, Cassie nodded. When Jane didn’t elaborate, she prompted, “So that means …?”

“Silly woman! I will make your fantasies come true.” Jane folded her arms across her impressive chest with a self-satisfied nod, as if that explained everything.

“Fantasies. But I don’t have any fantasies.”

Jane snorted. “Shyeah. Sweetie, I know what you were thinking about your neighbor’s hunk of the week. Kyle, wasn’t it?”

Cassie felt the blood rush to her face in a mortified blush. “So he was attractive. I can admit it. So what? Besides, I barely even thought …”

Jane’s smile was slyly knowing. “Gotta hand it to you, Cass, you sure can pack at lot of action into a few seconds of prurient thoughts.”

“Oh, for the love of—”

As you can see, the underpainting adds details, but those details are the gestures and thoughts that give life to the characters. Well, that’s the plan, anyway.

Often, I write the bare bones of a scene quickly – the dialogue and broad strokes of describing the characters and their surroundings – then do the underpainting on my second run-through.

It’s one of my favourite parts of writing. Who doesn’t like to add a little life to their world?

Say what?

Everyone has a particular challenge to overcome in their craft.

I like to think that description is my strong point. I love setting the scene and making it come alive for my readers. My bĂȘte noir is dialogue. It is something I work very, very hard at.

I envy writers who create natural dialogue, witty repartee, snappy exchanges. Oh, to be like that!

I remember being at a workshop with an author who said she mentally recorded everything she heard around her – the example was a beautiful young woman dining with a much older man who was obviously not her father, and throughout the meal called him, “Daddy,” in a little-girl voice – and stored it away in a mental file to use someday in her own books. Maybe I just don’t get out enough. :lol

My best trick to writing good dialogue is to simply imagine myself as a fly on the wall, looking on as my characters interact. Then, I just type whatever I imagine them saying, free-flow, no punctuation or dialogue tags. It goes pretty quickly that way, and comes out more naturally than anything I’ve tried yet. Afterwards, I go back and add dialogue tags where needed, and include what Diana Gabaldon refers to as “underpainting” – the actions and scene markers that give the dialogue life, weaving it seamlessly into the story.

Occasionally, I do think of fun, dramatic or illustrative phrases I’d like my characters to use. If possible, I write them down to refer to later. I may not use them at all if they don’t come naturally when my dialogue’s flowing, but it helps in my own mind with the pictures I draw of individual characters as the story builds. The dialogue may wind up getting pared down or cut in the final draft, but that’s all right. The more real my characters, and what they say, is to me, the more real they’ll be on the page.

And, hopefully, the more real they’ll be for my readers.

Sound of silence

I know writers who create playlists to listen to while they write – martial for action scenes, upbeat and happy for light-hearted scenes, love songs for romantic interludes. It is fun to see, when those authors choose to post them on their websites, what went into some of my favourite books.

While I didn’t go so far as creating playlists, I did at one time have music I liked to listen to while I worked on certain scenes. For example, the soundtrack for Lord of the Rings – Return of the King made for great listening while I was working on a high fantasy about a shapeshifting snow leopard. I also love alternative rock, so would listen to commercial-free radio over the internet while I wrote.

One year I spent a lot of time in waiting rooms, so wrote my first published book, Serena’s Song, out longhand to the sound of whatever station was on the radio – generally easy-listening – or musak coming over the office’s sound system. In the wee hours of the morning, after ending the night shift at the paper, I’d transcribe what I’d written to the sounds of new age music mixed with nature sounds. Very soothing.

I don’t know what’s changed, but I can’t do that anymore. I really do need silence to write. If I’m stuck, and I’m in a public place, I put classical – nothing too raucous – on my headphones to basically block outside noise.

I’m also one of those writers who can’t talk while I’m writing. I know some who can type, pause, type, pause, and create fabulous stories. Not me! I get in a groove and just go. If someone talks to me, or the kids come into my office to say hi or whatever, it’s like someone’s spoked my wheel. :lol I’m completely thrown out of my story.

Perhaps that’s why I do some of my most constructive writing at about 2 a.m., when the kids are sleeping, the animals snoring softly, the house silent except for the hum of the refrigerator, and nothing more musical than the wind sighing through the trees. But that's pretty nice all on its own.

How I write

Whether one is an experienced writer or an old hand, I think we all love to discuss craft – brainstorming, plotting, research, even the day-to-day nuts and bolts of stringing words together on a page.

One of the most hotly discussed methods is pantser versus plotter. Do you wing it, just start typing and see where the characters or story bring you? Or do you plot with all the skill of a master cartographer the map of your characters’ journey through their adventure.

I know writers who just wing it, and come up with the most captivating stories. It boggles the mind. I also know writers who religiously plot the action, write up full character bios, create timelines … that, too, boggles the mind.

I am firmly on the fence. :lol

Sorry, but it’s true! I use elements of both when I’m writing. All of my stories begin with what-if, usually involving a scenario or character. For example, drawing from Three Wishes, what if an office worker with a secret crush has the chance for her dreams to come true in a very unexpected way? From there, I know how the story begins and how it ends. I know some major points in between, which I sometimes type out as bullet points, and that’s about it. I’m ready to begin writing. Once that starts, I can flesh out the characters as I go, add to the plot points, maybe add more conflict if it needs it.

That said, I do a lot of internal writing, if you will. I think about a scene, working it out in my mind, to the point where by the time I turn to my computer, it usually writes itself. My books, so far, have all ended the way I intended, no major surprises for me there.

I often think being a plotter would be far easier. I do sometimes get stumped about what to do next. A great plotter would know exactly what happens next, no hesitation. Sadly, I can’t seem to plot.

Oh, I’ve tried. When I do, I angst over the plotting, get stalled, and it just produces frustration. As it stands, if I’m stuck on a scene, I skip it to come back to later, and move on to what I do know happens. Doing that also means getting swept up in less self-editing as I go, though I’m not always as successful at that as I could wish.

Bizarre as it sounds, it seems to work for me.

The most important thing to realize is what works for me may not work for you. You must find the mix that fits best with your own writing, and go with it. Putting word to page is what matters in the end, not how you get there.

Ta da! The website redesign is done

Welcome to the revamped edition of my blog and website.

Web designer Andy Tomec, of Atomec Productions, has done a fabulous job of creating the new look. Hopefully, the site is much easier to navigate now, a little less cluttered. I especially love the different banners at the top of each page. Don’t they look divine? And the thumbnail book covers on the Books page are a great addition. Simply click on the cover to jump to a more complete summary of the title, read excerpts and, if available, watch a video.

As some of you may know, I have so far not been the most dedicated blogger. Well, here’s hoping to turn over a new leaf.

So, what am I doing now?

I’m putting the finishing touches on a contemporary erotic fantasy called Three Wishes. Actually,it’s a bit hard to slot into a genre. The base story is contemporary, featuring office worker Cassie who has a secret crush on a consultant, Michael, whom she’s been working hand-in-glove with at her media communications company. Then Cassie discovers an anonymous gift on her desk: an exotic bottle of perfume. When she gets it home, a genie – whoosh! – appears to fulfil three erotic wishes … While Cassie is a romantic at heart, she naturally chalks it up the next morning to bad wine and a weird dream. From there, Cassie embarks on a nightly journey starring Michael as the man of her dreams, first as a medieval knight, then as the twin bar owners of a smoking-hot nightclub, and finally as the triplet consorts of a galactic princess. There we have historical, contemporary and futuristic scifi thrown into my fantasy genie-in-a-bottle story. You see now why I said the genre is a bit tricky to describe?

Another thing I have on my plate is judging duties for Launching a Star. This is the third year I’ve helped with the contest, which keeps getting bigger and bigger. One of the entries I judged last year won the contest. As an editor and avid reader, I love the chance to see the work of such talented unpublished writers. It takes me out of my writer cave for a while.

Finally – and this will sound truly mundane – I’m waging war against an invasion of houseflies. It’s true! Every fall, when the weather turns cold, I have to cope with an influx of flies looking for somewhere to wait out winter. I just wish they could find somewhere else. It drives me nuts! One would think the cats (we have two) would take care of business. Sadly, even they can’t keep up. It all comes down to fly strips and patience. Ugh!
